I bought several of these locks to secure my kayak, canoe and motorboat after someone stole my canoe right out of my backyard. The big advantage of this lock is that the cable can slip through a small opening, like a dock cleat or the pre-drilled hole in the bow of my kayak. The locks worked fine for the first year, but after a year of being outside the lock corroded to the point where I couldn't even insert a key in the lock. No amount of WD-40 or Liquid Wrench would loosen it up so I was forced to cut the cable. That leads to the next concern. Using nothing more than pliers and my long-handle garden pruners, I managed to gnaw my way through the cable in about 15 minutes. I would imagine that with better tools the cable could have been cut much quicker, so it's not a high-security device; I think it would provide a reasonable deterrent though for all but the most determined thieves.
The 8417D is an impressive cable lock. The cable diameter is actually 8mm, not 5. This translates into a stronger cable, but slightly less flexibility and more weight. The device works by two opposing jaws clamping down on the vinyl coating of the cable when locked. The vice grips are about 3/4" long each, so they provide more friction than any person could feasibly remove without tools. It also coils up nicely, and comes with a velcro strap to bundle it up for storage. My only concern is the very small key pattern, which can probably be picked without too much trouble.
I bought four of these for my game cameras and Amazon delivered very quickly - as usual.
I replaced my homemade locking cables with these and they are PERFECT for my Moultrie game cameras. The cable went into the holes perfectly. The 3/8" cable locks are too big, these were a perfect fit - not too tight, not too loose. The only drawback is that they will not come keyed alike when ordered from Amazon. Maybe go to a local store that carries these and try to find matching sets. I had no luck locally. You might get with Masterlock if you want them keyed alike, but the price I paid for them here, I can and will carry four different keys.
They are easy to work...put in the key, turn the key (to unlock), which opens the hole so the cable can go in, while the key stays in the unlocked position, put the cable in the hole, then turn the key (to lock) and remove it. You can still pull the cable tighter, but you can't loosen it up. Great for game cameras.

The lock performed just as advertised. It was easy to use and works great locking down my desk top computer in a large open warehouse. Very well made, and sturdy.
i use these locks for my hunting cams the 3/16 lock works on the leaf river, cuddy back ,and talon trail cams . they work good on treestands as well.if you need more than one try to get them keyed the same.
This lock works great BUT you have to follow the instructions. If you put the cable in the wrong direction it does not hold at all. If you put it in the other way it locks fine. Just be sure to note which way it says to insert the cable and you will be fine.
Really awesome bicycle cable lock. Able to fit it through a tiny hole in my bike seat and through my wheels and helmet. You only have to worry about the thickness of the cable, it doesn't make a loop at the end which makes most cables bulkier. I would suggest using this with a u lock if you have a decent bicycle. :)
Works really well for me. Really happy about buying this item. You won't regret it. I just coil it up after I unlock it, and just keep it unlocked until I use it the next day. That means I only have to use my keys once a day. Saves time due to not needing keys to lock the bike, only to unlock the lock.

The Master Lock Python is perfect for my needs--and a whole lot more.
I originally purchased the lock for attaching my helmet, jacket (through the sleeve) and any other stuff to my motorcycle. It serves this purpose and more. With a 6' cable you can come up with all kinds of uses.
Interesting point: it was less expensive to buy from Amazon--shipping included--than it was for me to drive down the street to the big box. Go figure! Yeah--it's a great buy.

I bought this cable lock to replace a combination cable lock that I used to lock my helmet and jacket to my motorcycle. The numbers wore off the combination lock making it difficult to operate. The 5/16 cable is easy to slip through the sleeves of my jacket and 6' is plenty long enough to go through the sleeves of both mine and my wife's jackets and through the chin guard of our full face helmets. The lock is light weight and doesn't take up much room in my saddlebag.
This cable lock was supposed to be 5 mm thick. Instead the cable was 8 mm thick. I returned it and was quickly refunded for the purchase.
I bought 2 of these to deter my game cameras from being stolen. One works fine, but the lock froze on the other one and I could not get it loose. It was not cold or wet.I carry a little pair of brush shear and cut it off the tree with the shear. It took about five minutes to cut it. I did order another one to replace it with. Here is hoping it works.
This review is for the Master Lock 8417D Python Adjustable Locking Cable, 6 foot.
I use this on my bike. I live in Queens, NYC, and ride my bike to the subway each day.
I use this lock as ONLY a seat and rear rack lock, I loop it through my seat rails and around my rear rack and then through the bike stand. It is only to secure my seat and rack. I use an OnGuard Brute U-Lock w/ cable using the Sheldon Brown technique of securing a bike with a U-Lock through frame & rear tire and cable for front wheel to lock the bike.

This lock it almost perfect. It is thin enough to get through my seat rails, which have almost no clearance, and it is light weight and easy enough to use. It offers just enough deterrent to make it not worth a thief's time to steal my seat and seat post. I have a crappy seat anyway, but I have a shock seat post I would like to prevent from going missing, not to mention getting out of subway only to see seat missing and then walk bike home or ride bike with no seat!
The biggest flaw in my mind with this lock is its keys, they are TINY. I know its a small lock, but these keys are ridiculously small. And hard to turn. I am very afraid I will break the key off.
Would I buy this again, not sure, I would probably look harder for a very thin looped end cable and hook it to the U-Bolt, this would eliminate a key, have to many on my key ring as it is.

I use this lock to secure items to my motorcycle (jacket, helmet). The length allows me to secure mutliple jackets and helmets and gives me peace of mind they will be there when I get back to my bike. I would recommend this lock to anyone looking for a way to secure their items to their motorcycle.
I bought 2 of these cable locks for my trail cams. One wouldn't release the cable. I had to return it for a replacement. Amazon was great to work with on that matter. The locks are not the quality I expected for a Master Lock product.
These are the only locks I have been able to find that will fit my Moultie Game cameras. So far I still have my cameras. Master lock has always made a great product.
Nice price and works fine . I store it in my TopCase and use it on jackets and helment etc so I don't have
to lug the stuff around .
to lug the stuff around .
I'm pretty happy and confident with this lock, i used it alternately to lock up the brake pedal and sterring wheel of my van, then on work days i used it to tie down my motrcycle on something and when i ride, i used it to tie down my bag behind my cargo rack
I love this lock for locking up my bicycle and for wrapping around my wine cooler to keep it from being opened. Great product. Highly recommended.
This lock cinches down for a tight fit. The cable is small enough to fit most hasps. With the right tools, it can be cut but it would take some effort. Little locks keep honest people honest.
This works great for locking a trail cam to a tree or locking up your tree stand while away. I think there would be almost endless use for this lock. It is light weight and easy to use.
this seems to be a great lock its long enough to lock a camera and the 20/20 mount to most trees .
Perfect light weight cable lock. I don't use a lock often and would be unhappy hauling around a heavier one. The cable is thin but I figure if the thief has a tool to cut this cable the tool is likely capable of cutting a heavier cable also.
In August, we decided it would be a good idea to purchase a safe for our daughter to keep her laptop in,in her dorm room. We ordered this from Amazon. Coming closer to dorm move-in, we realized we needed something to secure the safe. I immediately checked Amazon, and found this locking cable. My son secured the safe in the dorm, and the cable lock was just perfect!! Amazon was the place for so many of my daughter's college needs, it was great to be able to just order exactly what we needed and have it delivered within a few days! No wasting gas or getting to a store to find they didn't have what we needed!! Or even worse, buying something that isn't quite what you want. This locking cable is high quality, and I would recommend it!
This is the lock I carry with me when riding allowing me to lock my bike up to any poll or rack in the parking lots every where.
I purchased this cable & lock for my hitch. I wanted to be able to tie all the pieces together with 1 cable instead of different locks and cables i was already using. This was the perfect fit!
As advertised. Hard to go wrong with a Master Lock product, even though now they are made in China (sigh). Used it to lock down my computer, cable fits thru tangs on the case.
This works perfect for what i needed it for and so was the price. OLD JACOB (The "Old" Adventures of Hailey and Jared #1)
good lock for game cams but cable can be cut into with wire cutter pliers so don't expect this to hold something very valuable for long time without checking it daily
Good lock and cable is long enough to make it useful in several different scenarios. Only issue is that the key is kind of difficult to turn at times.
I use this outdoors all the time. I love the 'no loop' at the end. The 6 foot length is more than enough for me. Very quick to use on a trail camera.
